Aggarwal grew up in Ludhiana, Punjab, in a Punjabi Hindu family. He attended the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering in 2008. Bhavish Aggarwal Career

Microsoft

In May 2007, he started working as a research intern at Microsoft Research India. After graduating in 2008, he continued working at Microsoft Research India as a research associate from July 2008 to July 2010. During his time there, he wrote three academic papers that were published in international journals and filed two patents.

Ola Cabs

Bhavish Aggarwal, the co-founder of Ola Cabs, got the idea to start the cab company when he had a bad experience with a taxi. He and Ankit Bhati co-founded Ola Cabs in 2010. Ola Cabs has now become the largest network of personal transportation options in India and is very popular in 100 Indian cities.

Due to the economic repercussions of COVID-19, Ola Cabs had to lay off around 5000 employees in May 2020. The pandemic accelerated innovations in technology, and Bhavish Aggarwal believes that the market might move towards more car rentals and subscription-based ownership of cars. He expressed his views in a webinar addressed to the students of Bennet University.

In April 2022, an internal email was sent out to Ola employees, announcing that Bhavish Aggarwal would be stepping down from the day-to-day operations of the company. He will now focus on the future of Ola’s venture into electric vehicles and quick commerce.

Electric Mobility Private Limited

Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder of Ola Cabs, launched Ola Electric under ANI Technologies on 26 May 2017. The company set up a pilot project in Nagpur, Maharashtra, by installing charging stations throughout the city and acquiring electric cars, buses, and rickshaws from manufacturing companies. In December 2018 and January 2019, Aggarwal purchased a 92.5% stake in Ola Electric from ANI Technologies (amount undisclosed). In January 2021, he acquired 500 acres of land in Pochampali, Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu, to establish Futurefactory, the world’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturing facility.

Aggarwal has big plans for Futurefactory. In September 2021, he announced that the facility would employ only women and provide jobs for more than 10,000 women at a time. As of March 2025, Ola Electric offers multiple electric two-wheelers, including the Ola S1, Ola S1 Air, and Ola S1 Pro, with newer models expected. Additionally, on 20 June 2022, Aggarwal unveiled Ola Electric’s first electric car, which was planned for release in 2024. As of March 2025, Ola Electric is gearing up for its launch, with further advancements in EV technology. He also announced the establishment of the company’s Battery Innovation Centre (BIC) in Bangalore, which will be Asia’s largest cell R&D facility.
