The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted divorce to Chef Kunal Kapur on the grounds of cruelty after observing the “wild allegations” his wife has made against Kunal Kapur to ‘disrepute’ him in the eyes of the court.
Kunal Kapur’s wife stated in her written submission that the chef, when he started getting public attention, engaged in activities such as sending flirtatious texts to his fans and demanding unnatural sexual demands from her. However, she failed to provide any proof to the court, and she admitted that the photographs she provided were the presumption of illicit affairs.
In the light of the aforenoted facts of the present case, we find that the conduct of the respondent (wife) towards the appellant (husband) has been such that it is devoid of dignity and empathy towards him.
Justices Suresh Kumar and Neena Bansal Krishna
The bench further said that the allegations made by the wife are purely baseless and affect the reputation and image of chef Kunal Kapur among the public. Therefore, such an act amounts to cruelty.
The couple tied the knot in April 2008 and have a son who is 12 years old. Kunal Kapur, judge of Master Chef, a television show, accused his wife of disrespecting his parents and humiliating him.
When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage and there exists no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together,
Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna
The court said conflicts are normal in every marriage, but when the conflicts turn into disrespect towards the partner, the marriage itself loses its sanctity.
