Election Commission To Remove Bengal DGP, Home Secretaries Of 6 States

The Election Commission of India ordered the removal of top officials from several states, which include the West Bengal director general of police and the home secretaries of 6 states.

The West Bengal director general of police, Rajeev Kumar, will be removed, as per the order from the Election Commission of India (ECI). Removal orders have also been issued for home secretaries in six states: Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The ECI, headed by CEC Rajiv Kumar, issued decisions that resulted in the removal of Brihanmumbai’s municipal commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, as well as several commissioners and deputy commissioners. Additionally, those dismissed were secretaries from Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh’s general administrative departments.

The commission has requested that all state governments remove officers from election-related duties if they have been serving for three years or are assigned to their hometown, according to PTI reports.

Maharashtra had disregarded the directives regarding several deputy municipal commissioners and a few municipal commissioners. 

The commission expressed dissatisfaction with the state chief secretary and instructed the transfer of BMC officials, along with the additional and deputy commissioners, with a deadline report by 6 p.m. on Monday.

The chief secretary was also instructed to move all municipal commissioners in comparable positions, as well as any additional or deputy municipal commissioners, to other Maharashtra corporations.

The Election Commission has requested the names of three officials by 5 p.m. In order to choose a new DGP for West Bengal

Rajeev Kumar, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) official who is close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was appointed as state DGP by the West Bengal government in December.
