Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, popularly known by his nickname, Mammootty, is an Indian actor and producer who primarily works for the South Indian film industry. In 2000, he came into the limelight after working on the bilingual biopic Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar which earned him several national awards.

Mammootty was born on 7 September 1951 (age 72 years; as of 2023) in Chandiroor, Travancore-Cochin (presently, Kerala). His zodiac sign is Virgo. Mammootty did his primary schooling at Government High School, Kulasekharamangalam, Kottayam. After relocating with his family to Ernakulam, he attended a government school there. Subsequently, he pursued his high school at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. Soon after completing his higher secondary education, he attended Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree. After graduation, he attended Government Law College, Ernakulam, where he pursued an L.L.B.

Born and raised in a Muslim family in Kerala, India, Mammootty’s father, Ismail, had a wholesale garment and rice business and was also involved in rice cultivation. Meanwhile, his mother, Fatima, was a homemaker. Besides, he is older than his siblings. Additionally, he has two brothers, Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah, and three younger sisters, Ameena, Sauda, and Shafina.

Wife & Children

In 1979, he entered into an arranged marriage with Sulfath Kutty. Meanwhile, the couple has a daughter, Surumi, and a son, Dulquer Salmaan, who is also an actor. Currently, he resides in an exquisite residence in Kochi.

His two nephews, Maqbool Salmaan and Ashkar Saudan, are Malayalam actors primarily working for the television industry.

Malayalam

Mammooty, a well-known actor in the South Indian film industry, has worked in more than 400 films in his entire acting career. Venturing into the industry in the 1970s, he made his film debut with the Malayalam-language film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, wherein he played an uncredited role. Subsequently, in 1980, Mammooty made his acting debut with a Malayalam film Vilkkanundu Swapnangal in which he played Madhavan Kutty.

Between 1980-90, Mammooty appeared in some popular films including Ahimsa (1981), Kodunkattu (1983), Anithichuvappu (1984), Nandi Veendum Varika (1986), Sayam Sandhya (1986), August 1 (1988), and Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu. In recent years, Mammooty has worked in many Malayalam films including Nanparkal Nerathu Mayakkam (2023), Christopher (2023), Kannur Squad (2023), Kaathal- The Core (2023).

Telugu

In 1992, Mammooty made his Telugu debut with the film Swathi Kiranam, wherein he played Anantha Rama Sharma. Subsequently, he has worked in several Telugu films including Surya Putrulu (1997), Yatra (2019), and Agent (2023).

Hindi

In 1990, Mammooty made his Hindi debut with the film Triyatri, wherein he played Mathew. Subsequently, he has appeared in several Hindi language films including Dhartiputra (1993), Swami Vivekananda (1998), Sau Jhooth Ek Sach – The Uninvited (2005), and Halla Bol (2008).

As a Narrator

In 2010, he made his narration debut with the Malayalam language film Anwar. Subsequently, he has worked as a narrator in several Malayalam films including Odiyan (2018), Jana Gana Mana (2022), Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022), and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023).

Controversies

Slammed for Racist Remarks

In 2023, Mammootty attracted controversy after making a racist statement during a media interaction while promoting his film Christopher. In the video which went viral, Mammootty was seen interacting with Actress Aishwarya wherein the actress was describing Mammooty’s beauty. Nevertheless, later Mammooty went on saying she should have compared him with “white sugar” instead of jaggery which is made of ‘black’ karupatti.

However, the humorous yet racist remark didn’t go well with social media and many netizens criticised him for being “racist.” Following the incident, one of the netizens tweeted, “Colourism in our society is so deep-rooted and normalised. In this clip, #Mammootty can be seen casually cracking such colourist jokes. Most of his supporters may think it’s harmless, but something like this shouldn’t be normal, especially coming from someone like Mammootty.”

Summoned at Wayanad District Consumer Court

In 2015, an individual of Koopil House in Mananthavady, K Chaathu, filed a case against Mammooty and a soap manufacturer after he felt cheated for buying the product, Indulekha Soap; Mammootty endorsed the brand. Chaathu claimed, “I used the soap but failed to find the desired outcome of beautification, as claimed by Mammootty in the TV advertisement, after using the soap.
