Despite moving to Mumbai to pursue television work, he struggled to find success.
In 2003, he appeared in a short film called The Bypass with Irrfan Khan. Between 2002 and 2005, he was mostly out of work, living in a flat with four others and earning money through occasional acting workshops. In 2004, he was unable to pay his rent and had to ask a senior from NSD if he could stay with him. The senior allowed him to share his apartment in Goregaon if he cooked meals for him.
Siddiqui landed some minor roles between 2004 and 2007, including in the film Black Friday, which was a nominee for the Golden Leopard. He made a cameo appearance in the song “Emotional Atyachar” in the movie Dev D, playing the role of Rangila, and performed a duet with Rasila, known together as Patna ke Presley. In 2009, he appeared in New York. However, it was his role as a journalist in Anusha Rizvi’s 2010 film Peepli Live that first gained him widespread recognition as an actor.
In 2012, he appeared in Prashant Bhargava’s Patang: The Kite, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. Siddiqui’s performance was highly praised by film critic Roger Ebert, who stated that the role “transformed his acting style,” and he awarded the actor the ‘Thumbsup Trophy’.
