With at least 4 volumes of Manga left to adapt into anime, we can expect a renewal of Kotaro Lives Alone. It’s been more than 18 months since the release of season 1 and we have no information on the sequel season. What do we know so far?
The first season of Kotaro Lives Alone was an emotional rollercoaster ride with many heartwarming and heartbreaking elements. The anime is based on a Mami Tsumura-penned Japanese manga series.
The Shimizu Apartments get an expected four-year-old Kotaro as a new tenant. Kotaro does his daily chores with his toy sword tied to his waist. Kotaro is wise irrespective of his small age and soon started influencing people around him. He has a strong determination to meet his parents someday.
Official Status: Pending (Updated on: December 24th, 2022)
Anime renewal announcements are often made between weeks to several months after release. But it has been over 18 months since the release of season 1 and no announcement has been made yet. The anime received an overwhelming response from the critics and audience. Also, season 1 ended covering only 4 volumes of the manga series. Looking at the success, remaining source material, and track record of Netflix, we can expect a renewal of the series sooner or later.
But we can’t ignore the fact that the anime only made the top 10 on Netflix in five countries. The highest ranking score was 3rd in Japan.

In Season 1, we learn that a lot of heartbreaking and tragic incidents have happened to Kotaro, due to which he now lives alone. He has been neglected by his parents. His numerous funny quirks are the result of trauma from the past, such as his fondness for tissues. When Kotaro was left to starve, he had no choice but to eat tissues.
Karino, a young boy in the neighborhood who has had constant watchful eyes, made a shocking discovery that Kotaro is unaware of his mother’s death. Kotaro’s father is alive but he is abusive and has no contact with the child. Kotaro only has Karino as the name of the family.
Kotaro Lives Alone is not very easily accessible on the internet with all eight volumes translated into English. Only the first two volumes are available on the internet to read. From volume onwards, you need to pay and it is only available in Japanese. The anime only covered the first four volumes of the manga and the last four volumes are waiting to be adapted in season 2.
If somehow Kotaro Lives Alone is renewed and under production secretly, we can expect to see the series by late 2023. However, after being delayed for so long, we suspect that the show has been quietly canceled and we will not get to see any further seasons.
