Shehbaz Sharif secured his second term as Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Sunday; he secured 201 votes in parliament amidst protests. Along with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, his party, the PML-N, will form a coalition government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly elected Pakistan Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party on Tuesday. PM Modi took to X and wrote, “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.”

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of Nawaz Sharif, was appointed as the chief minister of Punjab province as part of the agreement forming the PML-N-PPP alliance. On February 26, Maryam, Nawaz’s political heir took the oath of office and became the nation’s first female chief minister of any province. Asif Ali Zardari, the former president of Pakistan, was appointed as the PPP’s senior leader and would hold the presidency, according to the other agreement.
Sharif’s party, the Nawaz PML-N, came in second in the February 8 elections. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, backed independent candidates who won the most seats but were unable to secure a majority in parliament.
