Shambhu Protest Eviction: Over 450 Farmers Detained by Punjab Police

Punjab Police conducted a significant operation to clear the Shambhu and Khanauri border protest sites, where farmers had been demonstrating for over a year. This move came amid escalating concerns about the economic impact of prolonged highway blockades on the state’s industries and trade.

Operation Details

The coordinated police action involved dismantling temporary structures, stages, and removing vehicles stationed by the farmers. Over 450 protesters were detained during the operation, including prominent leaders such as Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The eviction process was largely peaceful, with minor scuffles reported but no major incidents of violence.

Government and Political Reactions

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema defended the police action, emphasizing the necessity to restore normalcy for the state’s economic well-being. He highlighted that the prolonged highway closures had severely impacted industries and businesses, and normalizing trade and industry operations was essential for generating employment opportunities for the youth.

Conversely, opposition leaders criticized the crackdown. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu condemned the detention of farmer leaders, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of attempting to “sabotage” ongoing negotiations between the central government and the farmers.

Background and Farmer Demands

The farmers, under the banners of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, had been protesting at the Shambhu (Ambala) and Khanauri (Sangrur-Jind) border points since February 2024. Their primary demand was a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops, among other issues. Despite multiple rounds of talks with the central government, the issue remained unresolved, leading to prolonged demonstrations.

Current Situation

Following the clearance of the protest sites, the affected highways are expected to reopen soon, facilitating the resumption of normal traffic and trade activities. The situation remains tense as detained farmer leaders and their supporters await further developments, and discussions between farmer unions and the government continue.

The clearing of the Shambhu and Khanauri protest sites marks a significant development in the ongoing farmer-government standoff. While the immediate action has alleviated some economic disruptions, the underlying issues prompting the protests persist. Constructive dialogue between the government and farmer representatives is crucial to address these concerns and ensure long-term stability in the region.
